چکیده

The aim of this paper is to clarify the role played by referential factors in the development of a spatial code during reading. Specifically, it explores whether this spatial encoding is determined by referential events related to a change in narrative mode which affect the integration process. Participants read narrative texts consisting of two paragraphs in which the point of view either changed or remained the same. The display mode was also manipulated (spatialized versus nonspatialized presentation). The results of experiment 1 (reading task) indicated that readers take more

Processing of Lexical Bundles by Persian Speaking Learners of English

Formulaic sequence (FS) is a general term often used to refer to various types of recurrent clusters. One particular type of FSs common in different registers is lexical bundles (LBs). This study investigated whether LBs are stored and processed as a whole in the mind of language users and whether their functional discourse type has any effect on their processing. To serve these objectives, thr...

Identifying age-invariant and age-limited mechanisms for enhanced memory performance: Insights from self-referential processing in younger and older adults.

Self-referential processing has been identified as a possible tool for supporting effective encoding processes in the elderly population. However, the importance of self-reference per se, relative to the increase in meaningful elaboration normally associated with self-reference instructions, remains unclear. The present study sought to explore this issue further by examining self-referential en...

Source memory that encoding was self-referential: the influence of stimulus characteristics.

Decades of research suggest that encoding information with respect to the self improves memory (self-reference effect, SRE) for items (item SRE). The current study focused on how processing information in reference to the self affects source memory for whether an item was self-referentially processed (a source SRE). Participants self-referentially or non-self-referentially encoded words (Experi...

Effects of NP type in reading cleft sentences in English

This paper investigates factors which contribute to the complexity of English sentences with long-distance dependencies. Two hypotheses were compared: (1) increased referential processing between the endpoints of a dependency increases processing difficulty at the completion of the dependency (Gibson, 1998, 2000; Warren & Gibson, 2002) and (2) increased similarity between NPs awaiting role-assi...

Spatial distance modulates reading times for sentences about social relations: evidence from eye tracking

Recent evidence from eye tracking during reading showed that non-referential spatial distance presented in a visual context can modulate semantic interpretation of similarity relations rapidly and incrementally. In two eye-tracking reading experiments we extended these findings in two important ways; first, we examined whether other semantic domains (social relations) could also be rapidly infl...
